DoverMEI Annual Dove Hunt

Bill McCanse prepping

The DoverMEI annual Dove Hunt was this past weekend and it was a great time had by all. All guests of DoverMEI were treated to a weekend stay at the Valdina Ranch in D’Hanis TX. The ranch is a historical landmark in the area. With acres of majestic views, big Texas skies, and breathtaking sunsets, Valdina Ranch is a spectacular south Texas destination. The ranch was established in the 1930’s and operated as something of a small village. Many of the original features are still present and truly awesome to explore. Among these are several small barns, offices, houses, a full-size horse racing track and stables, butcher’s house and below ground speakeasy complete with an escape tunnel leading out to the Seco river.

The dove hunting is done on sunflower pivots that have been planted in large agricultural fields for the purpose of attracting doves. Each hunter was assigned a “bail”, a rolled bail of hay to lean against and conceal yourself in the open field. The birds were skiddish and alert, which required the skill set to be higher than usual. There was however, ample opportunity to take the limit each day, if you were a good enough shot to do so.

Later at night after the hunt, there was an open bar, beer on tap, large screen TV’s, swimming and large comfortable recliners to relax in. The meals were outstanding and consisted of things such as beef tenderloin, grilled shrimp, ribs and more, all cooked perfectly on a mesquite  fired open pit.

On Saturday, we were given a tour of the Ranch and were told of the historical buildings located on the premises. The scenic views were worth the trip, regardless of the hunting, food and accommodations.

It will be hard to beat this trip, we can only look forward to next year and what gem may be hiding out there we can explore. DoverMEI wants to thank all it’s customers, those who participated in the hunt, and those who were not able to attend. We look forward to seeing you on our future outings.
